Frequently asked questions
How are the main colors chosen?
The image is reduced to a small copy and its colors are grouped into the number of swatches you pick. Each swatch is the average of its group, and the percentage shows how much of the image it covers. Transparent areas are ignored.
Why does the picked color look slightly different from the palette?
Picking reads one exact pixel, while a palette swatch is an average of many similar pixels, so palette colors are often a bit softer. For an exact color, click the pixel itself.
Can I pick colors on a phone?
Yes — tap the image to pick the color under your finger. Tap any swatch or value to copy it.
What are HEX, RGB and HSL?
Three ways of writing the same color. HEX (like #1A73E8) is common in CSS and design tools, RGB (26, 115, 232) lists red, green and blue values, and HSL describes hue, saturation and lightness, which is handy for making lighter or darker variations.
How many palette colors should I choose?
Five or six is usually enough for a theme. Use two or three to find the dominant colors of a photo, and more if you want finer detail.
Are my images uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything happens in your browser, so your files never leave your device. You can confirm this in your browser's network tab while the tool is running.
